What's the secret solution?

Anybody want to elaborate on what they use to clean windows. I use dawn and Ungers pill. I know there's a lot of opinions out there on what's best but I just want to get it here in one place.

Question Gutter installation

As many of you know working in Northeast or anywhere that gets cold our residential season can be short and fast. As a way of extending my season and keeping profitable i added Seamless gutter installation to my company about 7 months ago. I purchased a machine and got all proper licenses to preform the work legitimately and trained my two employees on install and repairs. My main question is if anyone else here has done this or has thought of this add on. I understand my marketing attack for window cleaning and what my target demographic is. Unsure if i pursue this venture in the same way. looking for any and all advice. Thanks

Why are my guys so slow?

I have two guys per crew. We are doing all residential right now. One has about a year of experience with a few other companies and the other guy has been with me for 1.5 years. Now he's not a fast cleaner, but he's great with people he's reliable. Yesterday my guys made $45.00 per crew hour and today they made $59.00 ...

Its not my prices, I'm the highest in the area. Is it just my guys are slow? If so what are some good ways to fix that? Just experience?

Per window pricing in ct

Hey guys, I'm a complete noob . I was just wondering how much per window you guys are charging in ct. There are a lot of pricing threads here but the information is all over the place. So on average for the CT guys what do you charge per window inside / outside and do you charge per window, per hour , per pane ? What seems to be most practical

Identify this scratch

I did a window today that had a strange "scratch" on it. I've seen defects like this before. Almost certainly a manufacturing defect.

Imagine a typical grouping of scratches caused by a hunk of mortar being rubbed across the glass or whatever. Now imagine that scratch with a dark, metallic look to it. That's what this looks like. I've never really bothered to try to identify the cause of scratches like these, but the superintendent on this job was wondering how it could happen and i realized i didn't have an informed answer to give him.

so what's your best theory as to how these types of scratches occur? my best guess is it has something to do with the tin/float phase of the manufacturing process, since the scratch group definitely has a metallic hue to it.

also, this is NOT tempered glass. And it's not an IG unit. its just a basic piece of annealed, single pane glass.IMG_0444.jpg

Hello group, I have been following this group for a couple years now. I appreciate the wealth of knowledge out there among all of my fellow window cleaning professionals. I am wondering if anyone has used any online certification courses for boom lifts and scissor lifts? I have 2 employees that need certification, and thought online certification would be easier to arrange with our busy schedule. If anyone has used a particular site or company any suggestions would be appreciated.

Need a washer with power

Ey all

I have one account with large windows I have to pole about 10 uppers.

These are dark tinted windows.

I picked it up dureing the cool months of winter.

As the spring heats up I have run into a issue.

When the sun rises it heats up the glass .

So I pull out the monsoon for more water, BUT these windows are a baked on bird poop nightmare.

And the monsoon has no scrubbing power.

My porcupine scrubs like magic, but does not hold enough water.

I am now acutely doing one half of a window at a time to to get them clean before they flash off.

Can't go out in dark thirty because there is NO artificial lighting at all!!

I don't wfp my route work.

It's takeing twice as long as it did in the cooler months

And so, the reason for this long winded post is:

Any suggestions on a strip washer that holds tons of water and yet still has über scrubbing power??

Thanks

got me thinking about how to differentiate yourself from other window cleaners.

Its true that you sell your service and not the price, I have been pretty good at getting the prices that I ask for and I believe it is from my uniform appearance to the clean van and also slick website. Some of my rich resi clients seem to have that smirk on their faces as if they are impressed with appearance rather then what im charging so im thinking about developing a whole new wardrobe for days when I bid or service the rich homes.

I just ordered me dangerous dave bullring for holding my scrim, I got an idea to take off the metal ring and replace it with a gold bracelet. Customers will no doubt notice that hanging on my beltt.

Does anyone know if LouisVuitton or Guggi make squeegies and boabs?

Website Woes

So last year we had an employee who had some website designing skills revamp our website. We told him we wanted to be able to edit the text and photos ourselves at anytime. Well, he made us a website that we really like the design of. Unfortunately he did not give us a back door in to edit like we asked for, he told me that anytime we needed to edit something he would do it for us because he did it on "dreamweaver" and it is a $600 program that we don't want to buy. We liked the website so much that we agreed to go along with it.

A few months later, we had to part ways with him (for other reasons). Now we are unsure how to edit the website and can't ask him for help due to the conflict of interest (this is our fault for going along with his proposal). I would really like to tweak a lot of the text on it.

Does anybody know of any program that will allow me to edit something made in Dreamweaver by copy and pasting the source file?

Also any criticisms of the website or comments/suggestions are more than welcome: Home - J & M Window Cleaning

Help bidding building

Looking for some help bidding this 4 story building. They are looking to just have the exterior of the windows cleaned. The problem is the windows are not 'true' French pane. The grids are not sealed to the window so in reality it's just one big window with a metal grid to make it look like French panes. They said the last company that cleaned them did it with a pole and the windows looked "horrible" afterwards. I don't know how you could clean these without the water dripping down onto your cleaned windows. I counted around 4300 panes. Any suggestions?

Nickel Sulfide Inclusion (Spontaneous Breakage)

Well, it actually happened to me. Some time after we left the (new) client's house, the curved, tempered glass on her sun-room shattered.

She contacted me via email. Not accusingly, but definitely looking for answers. I gave her some info on NSI and promised to be helpful and said I would do some research on how best to resolve this.

Anybody else have this happen? If so, what did you do? What's the best avenue to take?

This is a large, rounded panel on a sun-room ("solarium"), so I'm guessing it's a rather pricey piece of glass.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Residential Customers Are Your Friends

My Friends Are My Customers, My Customers Are My Friends...

That's my attitude toward residential customers. This approach has helped the residential side of my business flourish while weeding out undesirable customers. I've become friends with most of my residential customers over the years and I've found that they are much more willing to accept my quoted price or price raises, rather, than to try to talk me down in price. When I go to bid a job I always chum it up with the potential client for a few minutes before I give the estimate. I Look them in the eye, with a good attitude, joke around with them a bit and make them laugh a little. That really breaks the ice.

Look to see where your commonalities are then work from there. A lot of the older clients are just happy to have a young, friendly, person to talk with so they are more likely to reschedule. Being friendly with your customer puts you both on the same page and makes the bidding process much easier. I think it's good for the customers experience as well as the window cleaners. It makes the work environment much easier too when you feel like you're working for someone you can get along with. At the end of the job, the person is much happier to write the check to someone they like rather than someone they don't. And they're more willing to reschedule. If you meet someone that seems really hard to work with try your best to find something in them you like enough to want to do a good job. It's just better all around when you and your customer are good friends.

Won't comprimise on price

Had a new customer scheduled for Monday morning. The house is a 3,934 square foot, 5.0 bathroom, single family home. Sold in 2003 for $1,200,000 according to Zillo. The lady called me yesterday and left a message "that after thinking about it, my price was too high and way more than what they paid last time." At first I was going to call back and see if there was a compromise price we could agree on, but stopped myself because it is a somewhat difficult residence to do. Two story, larger than standard windows, with minimum cut ups of 3 to 4 panes on some, and up to 12 and 15 panes on others. The front windows have an arbor to try and navigate, and front patio is ladder difficult. 49 windows, 7 doors with an average price of $6.00 each for outside clean only.

Just crazy. $318.00, outside only, ladder work, front half difficult to manage, house is worth 1.27 million on today's real estate markety analysis and they are squalking about the high side of $300? I was almost moved to reduce my price but no! I'll just look for a replacement job and feel comfortable with my pricing for the quality of work I deliver each and every time.

Okay. End of rant. Thanks for letting me vent! :-)

Legal requirements to starting up in New Zealand?

Hey all!

Im back again, after quite a long hiatus! I've been working for a window cleaning company for the last 3 years. I no longer work for them as heading into doing Graphic Design more & more. As work for this comes in patches, I'm going to start my own Window Cleaning company finally and do my design work at night times ;) I've got all the gear, experienced enough and have a logo/name etc.... Just wondering if any other New Zealand window cleaners can point me in the right direction as to what legal actions (if any) do I have to do before I can start advertising and working. As far as I've seen their is no legal action needed to become a "Sole Trader", does this mean I can just launch and get stuck in? Bit confused, heard different things from different people, none of which are window cleaners
