Solar Screens

I was asked to quote 18 30x48 windows to make a Solar Screen for each window.

My question is, do I price it the same as a regular screen repair/build including materiel cost?

Thanks for any advice and help

Commercial prices Inside verus outside

I just got a call today for multiple quotes on commercial buildings. Which is a credit union, not if good or bad yet. First time ever bidding inside/outside. Done outside bids before. My first thought is more $$$ for inside due to all the things that could be in the way. Any insight would be greatly helpful.

Thank you

Help! What would you do?

Hello everybody,

I first would like to say thank you to all who post here. I have received tons of useful advice on this forum and love hearing from all of you.

Ok... so here's my issue. I just secured a monthly contract to clean an office in the second story of a building. After securing this account I went to introduce myself to the business below telling them that I would be cleaning windows above them monthly. I figured it was the least I could do and maybe I could pick up another account.

On the initial clean I used my wfp to wash away all the chalky oxidation from the vinyl frames to ensure my new clients windows would stay cleaner longer. This made a bit of a mess of the windows below and the owner suggested I clean his windows for free every time I clean the ones above his.

He has a window cleaner already who is also a client of his so he does not want to switch. (Respect to that) His window cleaner only comes by every three months.

I was thinking about offering him a one time deal to clean up after my wfp initial clean, a monthly quote if he decides to switch, or just the dates I intend to clean the windows above so he can tell his window cleaner.

I have a wife and kids so we are not in the business of cleaning for free but we also like to maintain a good reputation.

What would you do?

Looking for 8 foot top for sectional ladder

Looking into getting another sectional ladder set and I cannot find an 8 foot top section anywhere. It looks like the company that made them might have gone out of business.

Anyone know where I may be able to find one left in stock? Or maybe a used one?

I can get a six foot top but would prefer the eight if I can get one.

Thanks,

-Greg

Former School Janitor turned Professional Window Cleaner.. DFW

So after being a head custodian for almost 8 years in a prestigious school in Colorado, I move my family to Texas only to find out that Texas folk dont really care about your experience, we gonna pay you 10 dollar an hour..... No thank you. Saw a great ad on CL and I'm into the window cleaners world. After 4 failed attempts at finding a fair company that pays me for my work.... (I still am owed more then a thousand dollars), 4 cracked ribs, I think I found the right company, till I start my own thing. Add 4 kids into the mix, and it sounds like good old fashion reality tv.

But seriously, I'm Jonathan, I recently purchased a Wash it pro, reach it mini, unger indoor kit, I use unger and sorbo products and squeegee and some other great tools that I think should help make me a great window cleaner. Anyways, Hello All!!!!

Glass Elevator Cleaning Woes

I've been doing this job for years but I could never figure out how to do this one pane. Now that I found the forum I thought I'd run it by you guys. This pane is the low one on the elevator itself on the outside of the pane between the elevator and the wall of windows. It's like less than six inches from the wall of glass. I tried to get at it from under the elevator but there isn't enough room. Is there such a thing as an uncleanable window? I clean the one on top from the top of the elevator and man it's a trick. You ever have to squeegee a window upwards? I've been doing this job for years but I could never figure out how to do this one pane. Now that I found the forum I thought I'd run it buy you guys. Help What is up with this window?

I don't know if you can see it in the picture, but this is what was happening to most if not all of the windows at a house I was working on yesterday. The top and middle portion of the window would look wet enough, but the bottom portion looked like it was bone dry even though I just went over it with my scrubber.

Is it because the glass is hydrophobic? Or somehow only the bottom portion is hydrophobic?

Question Do you call ahead of time?

So I had a new client who just wanted the Exterior of his windows done so we agreed that it would be easier/faster if he took off the screens before his scheduled appointment.

I get there yesterday on our scheduled date and screens are still up! Thankfully though when I was there to give him a quote only about half of the screens where up and unfortunately for the day of the cleaning, they stayed up. So I was able to at least clean just the ones that didn't have screens on them since he was not at home.

so do you guys call ahead of time to remind them of a scheduled appointment? Maybe a day beforehand or something?

Help How to determine what kind of glass your dealing with.

So I've been in the window cleaning business for a long time now (only 2 months lol), and sometimes it is very hard to figure out what kind of windows your dealing with. Low-E, Tempered glass, Solarblue, etc etc. And in a lot of cases it seems like the time you do figure it out, its too late. You scratched the glass.

So to try and prevent that I thought it would be a good idea if we all pitched in all of the tricks of the trade to figure out what type of glass where dealing with, and how to handle that type, the best way possible.

I've seen various ways and learned different techniques such as "if the glass looks grape (purple in color in polarized lenses), you must not scrape" in regards to tempered glass. But I had to really go searching for the answers. So lets try to keep all of the different techniques and all the different types of windows under one thread for the newbies like myself. :D

Ok, who would like to start us off??

TCF - Expenses and Accounting

Ive used TCF for a few years now (it's a great CRM), but a real bug bare for me in the inputting of expenses.. where you have to write in the description for every entry, rather than there being a pre formatted drop down box you could choose from and edit your own descriptions.

Over the years (3 in a row now) ive asked for the facility, but obviously because it's not something other have asked for it's never been done due to other more popular ideas.

I have no issue with that! I completely understand...

However, I cant go on using TCF for my accounts - it's doing my head in. It takes ages!! Filling in descriptions for regular but non recurring expenses, i could just as easily select from a drop down box.

So, what do you guys use for your expenses and accounting?? I need something thats more automated, and above all quicker!! (and less mundane, poke your eyes out feeling..)

HELP!!

Fabricating Debris How you can make help make a difference with tempered glass - for maybe $10

I do this ongoing PR project to try and get the glass industry talking about how to solve fabricating debris problems on tempered glass. It involves going to GPD, the world's leading glass conference in Finland this summer, getting a paper published on solving tempered glass scratch problems, and working to influence glass tempering experts.

I'm trying to raise funds for travel and expenses, and asking for your help. (Again.)

Why? Because if you help make this happen you help influence the quality of tempered glass.
The target audience at GPD is tempering experts - who teach the world how to solve tempering problems.
The goal is more experts offering more technical info, training, etc., specific to the glass fines/scratch issue.
And we are having success - as a direct result of these GPD efforts.
(I can explain, if anyone asks.)

I work at this throughout the year, and spend a lot of time on it.
I can afford a ton of time, but I need help with the trip - the travel, conference fees, etc.
(It's about $4,100.)

So I set up a Mauer to GPD GoFundMe page.
No groaning - Chris Lambrinides gave me the idea.
It's an easy way for people to make small donations - or big ones.
Any size donation gets your name on the poster at GPD - so they can see broad support from the window cleaning industry.
(One guy gave a dollar last time - no problem.)

It's got a nice summary that explains in more detail.
You can check fundraising progress.
And it's kinda social - you can like, share on Facebook and Twitter. (Please do like and share - that helps, too.)

Any questions?

Anyone have experience P/W cedar siding?

I have a lady that wants cedar siding pressure washed like yesterday and wants to know if I can do it. I said sure I can do it. She said she had two other quotes that were quite a bit less than mine but I assured her she would get much better service if she paid the premium. I think I can do this job but I was wondering if anyone else has ever pressure washed cedar siding with any luck. I know that pressure washing wood decks you have to not stop in any one place or it will mark. You have to pull the wand away from the wood in one clean motion. Any advise around tonight?

Help 50/50 split

So today I received a call from a window tinting company asking if I'd be interested them subbing some window cleaning to me. I said sure, I'd love to talk more about it. We chatted for a minute and are getting together tomorrow to discuss it all. Basically, they're going to market it and just pass it to me when it comes around. He mentioned splitting it 50/50. I feel like that is a bad deal on my end. I was thinking more along the lines of 70/30. What have you worked out with other companies like this in the past? Anything I should know before I go meet with him tomorrow? Is they're abutting I should make certain to have in the deal? Any other helpful info is much appreciated.

New RO unit help

I am currently running a 24" sediment and carbon filter to a 1/2 ' DI. This worked fine for a year or so but work has really picked up and im burning DI to fast to keep up with. I know most guys don't use the sediment and carbon with DI but I figured it couldn't hurt.

I need to add a 4x40 RO and pump. I am looking to hook it in the van and use customer water supply. I will have a tank it can feed to in case of emergency.

Questions,

WCR does not carry 4x40 RO and looking threw the net there are a zillion options. I am guessing 2500 g unit will work. Does anyone recommend a brand or site to supply me with this?

As far as he pump would a large diaphragm pump work or should I go with another type of pump? I would like to run the system on a marine battery if possible.

Any help is really appreciated,I buy all my supplies off WCR they just can not help in this situation.

First "big" commercial quote...

-Got a request today from a commercial property, from what google images/customer told me over the phone it's a two story building with large plates of glass. Basically your "typical" office park-like set up of a building.

-They want exterior only, in/out of their entrance-vestibule area as well.

-I guess what I'm asking is, since this is my first request from a commercial property I'm curious how i should present the quote once I go onsite and check it out tomorrow afternoon. I want to cover everything in the quote I give them once I'm done, I only want to do this because I probably won't be the cheapest and I want to make a good impact on them so they see the value in my service not just what I say when I meet with them tomorrow doing the quote.

-once the estimate is done they want it all sent by email to them so they have a copy of it and can look it all over.

First Time Cleaning Charge Xtra

I've read through a few different threads about pricing and such but I was wondering if anyone adds an additional charge for a first time Res cleaning. Example- extra $25 or extra $2 per pane?

I did a home today that was a total mess, a two hour job turned into 3 & 1/2 hours to complete. Inside out, sills, tracks and screens were all caked on dirt. When I went to complete the estimate I rushed through because the homeowner had to leave for work (my mistake).
