So in California we may have an El Nino winter this year. I am starting to plan on how to prepare for this. If it is as strong as they say it has the potential to be, it will be pouring so hard every day that route work might not even be feasible.
I am hoping that someone here who goes through some real winters can give me some pointers on what I should do to make it through the 3-4 months of downtime. So here is my plan thus far:
1. First, the business is well capitalized, so overall I am worried about money
2. Stop all advertising except Google ad words, which is my best performer
3. Cut Google Ad words spend in half at least, maybe more
4. Put 2 out of my 3 trucks on comprehensive coverage only and plan to only run one truck. This will lower my insurance expense and maintenance, etc. on the other trucks
Here's where I need some guidance/advice if anyone has any.
1.Make some hard employee decisions. Layoff? Allow for unemployment benefits? Keep them on but tell them to also get another job in the meantime? Just keep the person that answers the phone?
2. How best to keep the route work when service can't be performed on a consistent basis, if at all during the El Nino period.
3. If it's bad enough, should I just basically shut down for the winter and ramp back up in late March/Early April?
4. Any other advice welcome.
Thanks everyone.
