Question Walkin away from a job - whats your painfull customer threshold!
Just wondering if anyone has just walked away from a job. I mean literally just said "no that's it, I'm not continuing"
Everyone has a PITA threshold. I'm intrigued as to how much you would put up with.
Personally, I've never left a job, but I did tell one customer a few home truths about her expectations and gladly left without charging her! Best $100 I never got!:D

Website for review and suggestions.
Hey everyone,
I have finally made the jump and opened the window cleaning business here south of Atlanta, GA. Several of you guys listened to my gripes about my current job and encouraged me to start the business.
Well here I am now with a website that I am wanting feedback on. I did it all myself using wordpress and a theme. The thing I want to do now is show up in the search results for neighboring cities. I'd like any advice on that. I did also get my business on google places which has already yielded one job so that is promising. Just so you know I looked at a lot of your websites for direction for this one. In particular I really liked Jesse's web site Sparkle king, I liked his pricing guide. How has this worked for anyone that has a pricing guide on their website? I've heard some are for it and some against. Anyways, any advice would be appreciated. And I am aware of the picture that won't show up about 3/4 down the page.

Question Alternative to scrapers/blades
Does anyone have any alternatives they use to get things, stuck on windows, off? Something that would fit on an extension pole? I'd like to get away from using blades as much as possible.

eClean's Latest is Now Online: All About Employees (and a whole lot more)
Just in time for the Spring hiring season, the new eClean Magazine is online and focusing on employees: hiring, managing and motivating. This months' cover story features lessons from Curt Kempton of 5 Star Window Care and how he turned his company's biggest frustration -- i.e., his employees -- into his biggest asset. Just a reminder: Curt will be the keynote speaker at next week's Northeast Pressure Washing Seminar and Networking event (www.pw-seminar.com). I, for one, am really looking forward to Curt's presentation on systems.
Inside this eClean you'll also find a boatload of additional articles as well as links to two fun video recaps from the IWCA National Convention in Memphis.
Check it out at www.eCleanMag.com. (Note: print copies will be available to order in a few days.)

Updated pricing of storefronts
Hey everyone,
Longtime reader, first time writer......I wanted to get some updated pricing info for storefronts. I've found some older threads with pricing from 2007 that range from $.50 to $2.00. Is that still the going prices?
What are you charging? Outside? Inside? 10 windows + or less than 10? Weekly? Monthly?

ARROW-LOCK is one of the new features in the RHINO Clamps
This is just one part of the new Dual Locking Systems that could revolutionize the way you think about clamps,
as much as Reach-iT changed the way we look at Water Fed Pole design.

Killer local deals last month
Okay, so I have to brag a little bit about what I found on clearance at Menards. First, an 18' telescoping pole (4 sections), with an angle adapter/goose neck and it actually has Euro threads (also came with two angled broom heads, as this was packaged as a cobweb duster for ceilings). They were $6.00! Pretty rigid aluminum, but it does have the twist fittings, so somewhere in between consumer grade and professional grade. Should make a decent backup water fed pole up to 2 stories.
14 - 2.jpg
Secondly, bamboo rags. These were were in 3 packs for 30 cents so the rags were $0.10 a piece! They don't seem to be lint free on my first dry run, but maybe after a washing they will be.
14 - 1.jpg
Lastly, a poor mans doodle bug for $2.00. These are Grime Boss floor mops with a click connection, but I found a quick and cheap way to adapt them to a tapered handle (a chunk of 3/4" id rubber hose). They aren't velcro but the type that wraps around and has those push/snag ports on the corners. Haven't figured out how to get a white scrub to attach yet.

Wagtail advice
So I've been using my 14" wagtail combi a lot today, only thing I'm not able to do up to my standards is close out well on a pole.
Ive been using it as strictly with the modified flip over the top mop cover and it was perfect. Last night I switched it back to the factory settings and have used it as a hand tool today as well.
Are there any accessories that I can get to for a pole to make the closing out easier? Maybe an angle adapter or something?

Employee training system
Hi guys I would like to get peoples opinions on the best systematic way to train new employees. For example - giving them a handbook to read that describes the steps and ladder safety or on site training or combination etc. I know it takes a lot of time to become a "good" window cleaner and also to be safe but if you have any input on easy to grasp systems that would be great! Gutter cleaning and pressure washing apply as well. Since window cleaning has such a high turnover with most employees being in college etc I believe the key is to be able to have a good systematic setup that new guys can easily grasp.

Important Warning: Just learned a lesson
I just completed my first Angies List "Deal" and it was a lesson. I thought I'd been clear on what we would do and not do for $99 but I guess I wasn't. First one and I got the following negative review. The reply will tell you what I learned from the whole experience. I post so you can avoid this mistake. Customer review (I should mention that the customer had filthy glass and tracks/dog hair/8 sets of wood blinds wouldn't raise so I had to crawl behind them to clean the glass and vac the filthy tracks, and they were as suspicious as anyone could be. Maybe the next customer will be a bit more understanding.)
Review:"They showed up 20 minutes late , the $99 special went to $175 because some windows were larger , read the fine print. I'm sure I could have got the same deal just by looking through the yellow pages. They did a good job but I really wouldn't say I got the deal that I thought I was. Again , read the fine print . Any window that is not a " normal size" you will pay double for ."
My reply:This was my first deal with Angie’s List and I learned a valuable lesson, and the lesson is, I need to discuss the "fine print" with potential customers before we close the deal. I will in the future. My failure to go over the details of "the deal,” like I failed to do with [member name removed], will create misunderstanding. Lesson learned. The numbered content below will be part of every conversation in the future so we all have clarity about what we will do and can't do for $99. Deals have to have limits and the limits must be understood and agreed upon by all.
Dear Customer, 1. Please be aware that you have more than 20 regular sized windows in your home. Most 2 story homes have 40+ windows. 2. I will be providing an estimate to clean all the windows over the 20 you have. 3. You are not required to have the remaining windows cleaned; I'll clean 20 windows (inside and out, track/screens) and then leave, no pressure, no problem. 4. Please be aware of the limits outlined in the offer, and this is key, a "regular sized window" is a single surface of glass approximately 3 x 4. If you have a picture window 6'x8' that will count as 2 regular sized windows. I can't clean 20 large windows for $99 especially if they are on a second or third floor. 5. We will be cleaning the glass, the tracks, the screens for “20 regular sized windows for $99”. This offer is an "Introductory Offer," an opportunity for you to save some money and for me to meet a new potential customer with whom I can have a long term relationship.

LinkedIn Business Page Tips
I have been doing a lot of research about various social media marketing techniques and I thought I would start sharing some of what I have learned. This post I will talk about LinkedIn. LinkedIn can be a unique animal, especially when it comes to growing and scaling company pages. Here are a few things I've learned that might point you in the right direction:
1) Make sure your employees (or members of your clique that are customer/client interacting) properly are tagging your company page from their profiles. You might have to create some kind of how to guide to make sure they are doing it correctly. When you have everyone properly tagging your business page, you increase your chances of receiving some follower overflow from their personal connections.
2) Ensure the channel is part of your social integration strategy. Companies are really good at displaying links to more active social networks like Facebook and Twitter. However, they often forget about LinkedIn. Adding those buttons to websites, e-blasts and other areas across your digital footprint can assist in driving additional traffic. The unique company page link should also be in your email signature.
3) Fill out all aspects of the page. Ensure your creative is updated, the description is accurate and the products/services are filled out. Sounds simple, but I think a more complete page has a tendency to attract followers.
4) Update the page regularly with content. I can't tell you how many companies I see that simply leave their page blank. They set it up, then totally neglect it. This is another place to distribute content that points back to your site/blog, so leverage it. Give people a reason to follow the page. If there is nothing of value there, it will be a really hard sell.
5) Consider sponsored updates. Create a few test campaigns and sponsor a few updates once a month. I would avoid display targeting and stick with in-stream ads. While LinkedIn ads are VERY expensive compared to AdWords in my opinion, you have the opportunity to target audiences based on geography, industry, seniority, role, group affiliation and more. The targeting features are awesome and I've seen great results, especially when it comes to B2B lead generation (following up with folks who take a social action on the ad).
Anyway, these are just a few simple ideas to get you headed in the right direction.
Good luck. Let me know any other tips that may help out on this topic.
