So I find myself in a bad situation due to a bad back that has taken me out of 1/2 the season here in Minnesota and I am thinking about how to move forward. Odds are I will be able to do the big final push of the season starting in 5-6 weeks, but I am not sure my back will hold up as I am down right now for the 3rd time in 2015. I do this part-time and have a full-time career, my schedule has allowed me to work Fri-Sun doing windows in the past. I am a small company doing less than $25,000 last year, but I do have a very strong website that brings in all my leads of which only half I use and the rest I pass on to my older employer. This is my 3rd season and I have a good base of repeat customers, most jobs have a very good hourly rate especially gutter work. I have a great group of customers with only easy work as I was very picky and only took jobs I knew were easy to do(no storms or hard to reach windows), bulk is newer casement windows as I was trying to target outside only that could be done without customer home.
Since I am so small I don't know if I want to deal with all the legal run around of selling the actual business and am considering selling just my mailing list with all past paperwork for invoices and estimates and website which I have roughly 250-300 hours into. I can easily sell off the remainder of the equipment and fold the business. I presently have about $2k booked right now for the coming few weeks and expect to do around $8-10k the remainder of the season doing it 15 hours a week, much of which is repeat customers.
So I guess my question is how would you go about doing this? I really am disappointed to even be doing this as I was seriously considering going full-time next season but it looks like my medical issues are not going away.
A couple options I have thought of are:
1. Sell just customer list - Value?
2. Sell customer list and website
3. Sell entire business.
I have no clue what it is worth, working around websites quite a bit I am thinking the site alone is worth around $5,000-7,000. I would consider just selling my customer list and help the person convert those customers this year and next by contacting them individually. I would not mind keeping the website as my objective moving forward is building websites for the window/gutter cleaning world and have partnered up with a long time friend who does this for a living focused on small businesses. I would also be interested in helping the buyer grow their business through web marketing as I have done quite well myself and manage several other companies websites.
Opinions? I am open to anything, I hate to see all that I have built up simply wither away as I can't do the jobs anymore and they find someone else. I am fortunate to have a very good career going in another skill set that is not physical at all. I appreciate all feedback!
