garage door windows

Any ideas on this? I took out the plastic decorative inserts in the garage door of a customer and can't get them back in.
These are not your typical design where you just bend the insert a bit and it slides into a slot in the plastic that is around the pane.
They are about 20+ years old and the glass and insert are held into the door with a rubber gasket that has a spline on the back.
I talked to a local distributor of the door brand about pulling the spline, taking out the glass, and putting it all back together with the insert. He said "oh no.. don't do that, you'll never get the glass back in". So I'm looking for some kind of lubricant to get the insert to slide under these very tight rubber gaskets.
